Book publishing in British Columbia is an important part of the creative economy – one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the world. The publishing sector stimulates jobs for publishers and writers, as well as printers, illustrators, designers, editors and retailers. In 2013, B.C.’s publishing industry employed about 300 people, and an estimated $800,000 to $1 million was spent on freelance contractors.

The B.C. government supports the province’s publishers in a number of ways, such as through tax credits ($3.2 million in 2015), BC Arts Council funding ($620,000 in 2014-15) and Creative BC ($100,000 in 2015-16).  B.C. Books are translated in over 90 countries, bringing B.C. culture and literature to millions.
